Welcome to the beginning of Mrs. Boyle's Magical Math Blog! In our high school Integrated Math I and II classes we are going to use the blog to collaborate with each other and discuss exciting math topics! This will be a place where we will problem solve, troubleshoot pitfalls in assignments and have math discourse.
Purpose of the Blog
According to Abulibdeh (2013), students need to be connected to the learning community in the classroom in order to be engaged in the learning activities, which lies with the type of social interaction that makes them happy and enjoy learning. The use of blogs is an excellent way to create a learning community and create the type of social interaction that students crave. The 21st Century Learner is an expert in technology and developing those skills through blogging will help them increase their confidence in skills that will make them career and college ready. The blog will serve two parts, one in which I will drive the conversation by asking summative and formative questions after lessons and the other part will be a place for students to ask questions and help each other complete assignments and classwork. This type of small-group blogging will encourage interaction and engagement and create space for students' voice to emerge when they otherwise might not (Pimpare et al., 2008).
Alignment with ISTE Standards
For Students:
1.1 Empowered Learner: Students will empower their learning by building and customizing their own learning networks through blogging, as well as using technology to seek feedback.
1.4 Innovated Designer: Students show their capacity and ability to work with open-ended questions and persevere to solve problems.
For Teachers:
2.5 Designer: Educators design authentic learning opportunities and use digital tools to maximize learning.
2.6 Facilitator: Manage the use of technology and virtual environments to create meaningful learning experiences through blogging.
I am excited and eager to incorporate blogging into our math classes! By using this innovative technology we will continue to create meaningful learning experiences that will serve students in being career and college ready.
